A Lakeland man who was trying to drive around a railroad crossing barrier was hit with a citation after the train hit his car, according to Polk County Sheriff’s Office reports.
The incident occurred at the Reynolds Road crossing, between Highway 92 E and Main Street East, Tuesday at 6:43 p.m., when Kyle Douglas Thurman tried to drive around the barrier with his 2019 Nissan.
PCSO reports note Thurman, just a day before his 29th birthday, was injured in the crash, but survived.
A citizen who stopped to render aid, Angela Revell, told deputies she didn’t see the crash, but was a registered nurse, so offered to help Thurman until rescue workers arrived.
Polk Fire Rescue arrived and administered a tourniquet to Thurman’s left arm, according to reports.
CSX and Amtrak detectives arrived at the scene to investigate the crash. Deputies called ACT, a cleanup service, to respond due to fuel and oil being spilled from the vehicle.
Thurman was cited for driving under the railroad crossing arms.
