Southeastern claimed over a quarter of the spots on the Mid-South Conference All-Sun Division teams, and added two special awards.
Fire quarterback Cooper Jones was selected as the Craig Mullins MSC Sun Offensive Player of the Year, as voted on by the division’s head coaches. Jones passed for a school-record 2,584 yards and 26 touchdowns this season. He led all Mid-South passers in yards per game at 287.1, and was second in total offense per game.
This marks the fourth time in six seasons Southeastern had the league’s offensive player of the year.
Defensive tackle Loobert Denelus was named the Sun Division Freshman of the Year, registering 38 total tackles with 14 for loss. His eight sacks ranks fifth in the Mid-South, and his average of .9 per game ranks fourth.
Denelus is the program’s third freshman of the year, but the first on the defensive side.
Joining Jones and Denelus on the All-Sun Division First-Team were offensive linemen Mike Davis and Ryan Dalton, wide receiver Eugene Witherspoon, running back Bryan Bell, linebacker Nico Moreno, and defensive backs Chris Thompson and Cory Rahman.
Bell and Rahman are now two-time first team selections. Davis was a second team selection last season.
The second team saw, center Scott Carman, tight end Adam Toombs, running back Lorine Parker, defensive lineman Phillip Smith, defensive backs Nnamdi Umeakuana and Tyrail Davis, and punter David Larson honored.
Toombs was also a second team selection in 2018, as was Larson at kicker.
The Fire finished the 2019 season with an 8-1 record and were ranked 14th in the final NAIA-AFCA Top 25 Poll of the regular season.
