As it works to revamp the Joe Niekro Pro-Celebrity Golf Tournament, Florida Southern College baseball will not hold the annual event as scheduled in January, opting to work on improving the tournament in the interim.
The tournament, which was slated for Jan. 16 at Lone Palm Golf Club, will undergo a complete transformation into a one-of-a-kind event with hopes of returning in the fall of 2020.
“We’re very excited for the future of this event,” said Moccasin head coach Lance Niekro. “We decided that instead of rushing into something new, we wanted to take time to make sure we do it right. While it’s unfortunate that we won’t host the event in January, we do look forward to bringing it back bigger and better than ever.”
The annual event has featured some of the biggest names in the baseball world, including Fred McGriff, Al Kaline, Robin Roberts, Bill Mazeroski, and Phil Niekro. It’s also a chance for participants to meet and mingle with the Moccasin baseball coaches and student-athletes.
