The second 30+ point game of the season by junior Taylah Simmons was nearly enough on its own to help Southeastern win at Florida Memorial.
Simmons scored a game-high 33 points, grabbed five rebounds, dished out four assists, and had seven steals as the Fire (14-2) cruised past the Lions 91-35.
The guard from Melbourne, Australia was 15-of-20 from the field and played just 29 minutes.
The Fire had no problem shooting the basketball in their first game since beating top-ranked Concordia on December 20th. SEU was 62.9% from the field, and made 33 of their 45 shots from inside the 3-point line.
On defense, Southeastern limited FMU (7-8) to just 10 made field goals and a shooting percentage of 18.2%.
The Lions had the lead early on thanks to a 3-pointer by leading scorer Isis Lane, but was held to just half of her season average at just seven points. SEU then held the Lions without a basket for over five and a half minutes and led 23-11 after a quarter of play.
The Southeastern defense limited the Lions to just single digit point totals in each of the next three quarters, and forced a total of 29 FMU turnovers.
Marlena Schmidt was a rebound away from a double-double, scoring 17 points, and blocking two shots. Raegan Linster added 13 points, accounting for two of her team’s six made 3-pointers.
The Fire return to action on January 9th against Johnson & Wales, which is in second-place in The Sun Conference.
