Florida Southern College senior men’s basketball senior standout Brett Hanson has earned the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week, as was announced by the conference office on Monday. This is the third time this season Hanson has won the award, having done so on November 11, and December 9. For his career, this is the eighth time he has been so awarded.
As a team, Florida Southern is currently ranked No. 9 in the latest NABC Coaches’ poll, with a record of 17-2, including a 9-2 mark and a share of first place in the SSC.
Hanson had a memorable week, scoring 30 points in each of this past week’s two games. He began the week with 30 points to go along with a game-high six assists in an 85-76 victory over the University of Tampa. He followed with game-highs in points (30) and assists (8) in a 97-80 win against Barry University. Hanson scored his 60 points by shooting 57% from the field (27-47), 80% from the free-throw line (4-5), and 33% from behind the arc (2-6). In his 74 minutes on the court, he provided the Moccasins with 14 assists, 11 rebounds, six steals, and three blocked shots.
Hanson pushed his career scoring total to 1,966 points, the third-highest total in school history. The senior needs just 34 points to become just the third player in program history to record 2,000 career points. He is rapidly approaching Kevin Capers, who is second on the list, who netted 2,319 points from 2012-2015. The program’s all-time leading scorer remains John Ebeling, who scored 2,514 from 1979-82.
Hanson has also tallied 772 rebounds, good for seventh in the program’s record book. His 193 steals are good for sixth, while his assist total of 393 ranks ninth.
The Moccasins return to Sunshine State Conference action on Wednesday night, when they travel to Saint Leo for a 7:30 p.m. tip. The Mocs then return home to face Embry-Riddle of Saturday, February 1.
