Several Lakeland Police Department homicide detectives on Wednesday morning gathered together and walked into the Lake Morton Drive home of David Henderson, 63, and Edith Henderson, 67 — better known locally as Edie Yates, a Lakeland city commissioner from 2006 until the beginning of 2018.
LPD officials confirmed their identities as the victims of Tuesday night’s double homicide in the historic neighborhood.
The couple’s bodies were discovered inside their home at 127 Lake Morton Dr. Police were alerted to the residence after a family member requested a wellness check.
A neighbor driving by said they saw a man at about 6 p.m. Tuesday waving a LPD patrol car into the courtyard of the twin modern homes on the south side of the lake. An hour later, there were more than a dozen police cars and the area between Mississippi Avenue and Orange Park Avenue was cordoned off with yellow crime tape. The twin homes and a bungalow to the left of them were within the tape’s boundaries.
At about 8 p.m., detectives could be seen conferring in the street in front of the homes, however, no helicopter and no police dogs were seen in the area.
On Thursday, Waldon, 36, was arrested and charged with 10 felonies, including two counts of first-degree murder in the brutal stabbing deaths of former Lakeland city commissioner Edie Yates and her husband David Henderson at their Lake Morton Drive home.
