A Lakeland diner expressed frustration with being short-staffed on a sign that also blamed it on government handouts. This upset locals.
Many locals were displeased at a sign that the owner of Reececliff Family Diner posted outside its diner that said since so many people received “government handouts, no one wants to work anymore, therefore they are short-staffed.”
Reececliff Family Diner drew negative attention after a sign with a message that some considered “political” was displayed outside its door just more than a week ago, the Lakeland Ledger reported.
“Please be patient with our staff,” the sign read. “Sadly, due to government handouts, no one wants to work anymore. Therefore, we are short-staffed. So please be kind and patient with staff that wants to work and earn income, and not sit home and get a handout from the government. We are working hard to rebuild our team to serve you better.”
The sign was removed by the owner, James Bronkhorst, on Monday following an online backlash against the diner from locals and social media. “Unfortunately this sign has drawn a line in the sand because it is a political post and while they may feel a certain way, it will cost them business and many to boycott Reececliff …. It is happening already,” Jan Barrow posted in a Facebook group, according to the news outlet.
