A Great Day for the swan’s – Lake Morton swans given clean bill of health

A day after Lakeland parks and recreation workers corralled 62 swans at Lake Morton; the birds on Wednesday received a relatively clean bill of health.

City of Lakeland Parks Division workers gathered up the swans Tuesday for veterinary check-ups administered by My Pet’s Animal Hospital.

“Fortunately, we are dealing with fewer parasites than last year and fewer eye issues,” said Price Dickson, associate veterinarian at the animal hospital.

The veterinarian staff checks the swans’ weight, eyes, ears, and noses. They also take blood samples of each swan.

None of the swans had any issues that would have required a trip to the animal hospital.

“This is the first year in a while that we haven’t had to send one,” said Grounds Maintenance Supervisor Steve Platt.

Despite the good reports, some swans are dealing with wounds on the bottom of their feet.

“Unfortunately, those are due to them being overweight and when they walk into the roads, scuffing the bottom of their feet and getting an infection,” Dickson said.
