A recent study by Johns Hopkins University ranked Lakeland Regional Health Care System 18th out of the top 20 health systems in the United States that provide the most unnecessary care.
Among the unnecessary services they examined were “pap smears for women older than 65, an abdominal CT scan with and without contrast, and spinal fusions for back pain.”
“Though the metrics used for study are from 2016 to 2018, they do highlight how the lack of access to primary care providers and teaching facilities drives people to seek care through the emergency room,” said Hal Escowitz chief quality and medical informatics officer at LRH.
