Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said Tuesday morning that a deputy was shot and killed overnight while serving a felony warrant.
Judd said the deputy was one of four responding to a failure to appear on a “felony meth warrant” in Polk City around 3 a.m.
“They entered the trailer successfully, shots were fired, and ultimately one of our very young deputies, 21 years of age, he’s been with us a short period of time, died at Lakeland Regional Medical Center,” he said.
The sheriff said no other information would be released until later in the day.
“We want the information we have to relay to get to the immediate family members and work-family members before we broadcast it on social media or traditional media,” he said.
A procession was held Tuesday morning taking the deputy from Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center to the Medical Examiner’s Office on Jim Keene Blvd. in Winter Haven.
