“Constitutional carry” is not gun control its “political carry”

Editorial

A 2018 South Florida school massacre seemed to have changed national attitudes on gun safety legislation. But as the fifth anniversary of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas approaches, gun-safety advocates fear the state is sliding backward.

Gov. Ron DeSantis is vowing to make Florida the 26th state that allows gun owners to carry their weapons without a permit or training, dubbed “constitutional carry” by supporters.

Gun-safety advocate Fred Guttenberg tweeted that the so-called constitutional carry provision is really “political carry.”

Guttenberg, whose daughter Jaime, then 14, was killed at Parkland, wrote the proposed legislation “will add more guns in more places to solve a problem that doesn’t exist.”

More guns doesn’t make us safer, and we live in a dangerous state and we should be pushing laws that change behavior, but politicians seem to be pushing more guns with less regulation.

Permitless carry measure that Gov. Ron DeSantis wants will do more harm than good.

  1. We protect the dottering old fool in the Whitehouse with men with guns, members of Congress are protected by men with guns. Stars and other people of importance are guarded by men with guns, are our children any less important? Teachers who want too should be armed to protect our children.

  2. I wish we did have in one way have this right not to have a permit t carry them maybe we could prevent some of the shootings that have been happening here in Orlando

  3. Lock up criminals and stop catering to thugs and terrorists.

Law abiding citizens are not the problem. It’s the criminals that carry guns illegally and terrorize the cities.

These weak left leaning socialist DA’s are allowing these criminals to get out of jail almost immediately so they can go back out and terrorize the citizens once again.

Bring back strict law and order, support the police and allow the judges to judge!

  4. Wish you would study a little more on all the other states that have passed this Bill in to law, an see how their rate of gun crimes have dropped, before you make these political statements. We the law abiding citizens are the ones that are being stepped on, and you are backing the criminals. Them you are pointing the fingers at us the law abiding citizens and you want to take our guns away. Your party has got this all turnaround the wrong way. WE ARE NO THE PROBLEM.

      1. It’s NOT OPEN CARRY. It is and still will be illegal to open carry in the state of Florida. These anti gun zealots tell you will be a disaster, but there are already 25 other Constitutional Carry states. If gun crime ran crazy stupid after passing these laws then the anti gunners would be spitting out those statistics like crazy, but they’re not. Why? Because that never happened and in fact those states saw a drop in gun crimes. More LEGAL people carrying guns is a huge deterrent to criminals. It’s just that simple.

    1. Last time I checked, law abiding citizens like me can fairly easily get a concealed carry permit if they apply for one. This law is a bad idea and will benefit only those who want to carry but can’t get a permit. Go to a gun store like I do regularly, look at the people standing around the AR-15 pistol display and make a mental note. Those are the folks that will now be carrying. This will make our State more dangerous.

  5. It is crazy stupid that we need to pass a law to allow us to do something that is already in the law, it’s called the “CONSTITUTION “

  6. To the public. WHEN YOU OUTLAW GUNS ONLY THE OUTLAWS WILL HAVE GUNS STATEMENT FROM MY COLLEGE PROFESSOR O SO TRUE
