Biscotti Martini – Behind the Bar with The Twisted Mixer

Hurry up and chill your martini glass now! Because September 29th is National Biscotti day. And I have a Biscotti Martini recipe that will knock your calzino (socks) off!

If you’ve ever wondered why someone would have created a delicious desert with the texture of a brick you are not alone. The rich history of Biscotti goes WAY back to ancient Rome. “Biscotti” is an Italian word referring to hard, crunchy, twice-baked cookies. The name literally translates to “twice cooked”.

A practical hardtack-like food that could be stored for long periods and transported easily. Biscotti was an essential supply in the packs of Roman Legions. Like many travelers of the time, Cristopher Columbus is known to have carried Biscotti on his ships. Later, Tuscan bakers added almonds for the sweet desert resembling what we enjoy today. The dry, crisp texture is perfect for dipping in a sweet wine and enjoyed after dinner.

But I am not a baker. I am a bartender. So, I’ve concocted a recipe to allow you to enjoy the lite flavors of Tuscany in a boozy liquid form. I think you’ll agree that after one bite, um…I mean sip, of this decadent homemade Biscotti Martini recipe, you’ll feel as though you’re sitting in a quaint Italian café with the warm sun on your face, waving Buongiorno to the friendly locals. Boy, am I overdue for a vacation!

For a velvety texture try Disaronno Velvet. In 2021 the geniuses at Disaronno created Disaronno Velvet lending a creamier taste to the already delicious flavor of Disaronno.

Most martini recipes are around 5 oz but this recipe only calls for 4 oz. I wanted to give you room to play with the flavors a bit and see what you prefer. I think the flavors of vanilla and amaretto paired with a touch of coffee provide the most delicious equivalent to a Biscotti cookie but I would love to see what you think.

Ingredients:

1.5 oz vanilla vodka

1.5 oz Disaronno

1/2 oz Coffee Liqueur such as Starbucks or Tia Maria Cold Brew

1/2 oz espresso/cold brew concentrate

Nutmeg to taste

Directions:

Chill a martini glass by adding ice water to it and allow it to sit while you mix up the ingredients. Add all ingredients listed along with ice to your cocktail shaker and shake vigorously. Double strain into your now chilled and empty martini glass. Sprinkle on nutmeg or coffee beans to garnish.
