Earlier this year Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a new law that restricts student usage of cell phones while in school. PCPS is currently working on official policy updates to comply with this new law, but in the meantime, we want to make sure you are aware of the expectations for students.
The new law states:
“A student may possess a wireless communications device while the student is on school property or in attendance at a school function; however, a student may not use a wireless communications device during instructional time, except when expressly directed by a teacher solely for educational purposes. A teacher shall designate an area for wireless communications devices during instructional time.”
Simply put, students should not be using phones (or other wireless devices) while classroom instruction is taking place. At this time students are still allowed to keep their phones with their other belongings, but they should not use their phones during instructional time unless the teacher grants permission. Students who violate this rule can be disciplined according to the Code of Conduct.
We understand that emergencies may occur, and students will need to communicate with family members. Teachers and school administrators will use their discretion in those situations.
PCPS will provide updates as our policies are formalized. It’s important that we follow the law, and ultimately make sure that students are focused and not distracted by their phones in the classroom.
