Brightline to use AI to monitor trespassers near tracks

Artificial intelligence is all around us, including at nine busy intersections in Osceola County, where an AI bot is using surveillance cameras to track the causes of collisions.

AI will soon also be near the railways, using cameras to monitor trespassers near the tracks.

Brightline was awarded a $1.5 million grant for a system called Wi-Tronix that will help them improve public safety.

Director of Transportation and Transit for Osceola County, Steve Kane, said AI is helping them collect life-saving data faster.

“To have a camera recording that is phenomenal. Traditionally, it was a man sitting behind a desk, monitoring the cameras and what he saw, he would have to then write down and try to communicate that back to staff to try to deploy the right resources to fix the solution,” Kane said.

Kane said along with the AI bot, Osceola County is also using other tech tools to collect data on other things like how long it takes for a light to turn green.

“It’s taking data from the connected vehicles, think newer vehicles with OnStar type vehicles, and they’re transmitting data on how long they’ve had to wait at an intersection, and so we’re able to take that information and make travel time adjustments weekly, in order to optimize performance at those intersections,” Kane said.
