Rep. Fabian Basabe, R-Miami Beach, filed a bill this week that aims to repeal the state constitution’s definition of a legal union of marriage.
Titled “Repeal of Marriage Definition,” the bill specified removing the provision defining marriage as between only one man and only one woman as husband and wife.
The legislation, HR 167, would also “invalidate” any other legal union that is treated as marriage or its equivalent.
Under the state constitution, Florida’s legal union of marriage is listed under Article I Section 27.
If the legislature approved the bill, the change would be presented to Florida voters for approval or rejection on the ballot at the next general or special election.
District 106, represented by Basabe, covers much of Miami Beach. The area includes North Bay Village, Sunny Isles Beach, and Surfside.
Basabe defeated Democratic candidate Jordan Leonard by just 240 votes during the November midterm elections. Overall, Basabe garnered 50.2% of the vote to Leonard’s 49.8% out of over 52,500 ballots cast.
Same-sex marriage was legalized across the country by the Supreme Court in 2015. The landmark ruling was a part of Obergefell v. Hodges after same-sex couples challenged and sued state agencies in Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee on their bans of same-sex marriage.
It’s about time something was done!!It should have been changed because men and men and women and women have been able to be legally married since 2015!

The laws in America are based on the Constitution. A main reason ppl came to America was to have freedom of religion, to practice what they wanted or didn’t want. Ppl have the rt to practice religion OR NOT, neither side is better than the other per the Constitution. SCOTUS ruled in 2015 that the Constitution supports same sex marriages. If the Constitution said religion is the deciding factor then your argument would hold.
There is supposed to be a separation of church and state. Again, its not religion that gets to decide. If churches are being political then their tax category needs to change so they no longer receive the zero tax status.

It’s not any of my business to judge others, but I have the same freedom as all the homosexuals out there, and the freedom to vote for what I feel is how my God would want me to vote, and with that being said, I will vote against this amendment wanting to change God’s definition of marriage! I stand by God’s definition of marriage, not man’s!
