The digital divide still looms large, leaving tens of thousands of Floridians, particularly in rural areas, stranded on the wrong side of the broadband chasm.
That’s where the Affordable Connectivity Program comes in. Thanks to the efforts of President Joe Biden and congressional Democrats, this essential initiative was included in the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, along with several other key provisions to expand access to high-speed internet. The program provides much-needed financial assistance to low-income households, enabling them to afford broadband internet. In Florida State alone, the ACP has already helped nearly 500,000 Households Bridge the digital gap, providing them with a monthly discount on their internet bills — typically $30 — opening doors to countless opportunities.
For rural Floridians, where lower incomes coupled with spottier service options make connecting all the more difficult, the ACP is more than just internet access; it’s a lifeline. Imagine a single mother in remote Polk County, juggling child care and work while her children struggle to attend virtual classes without reliable internet. Or picture a small-business owner in Polk County, unable to reach new customers or access critical online tools because she lacks the means to connect. These are not isolated cases; they represent the stark reality faced by countless Floridians who lack affordable internet access.
The consequences of this digital divide are far-reaching. Students fall behind in online learning, job opportunities dwindle and access to essential health care resources becomes limited. We can’t afford to leave any Washingtonian behind, especially in an era where the internet is no longer a luxury, but a necessity.
Renewing funding for the ACP is not just about closing the digital divide; it’s about investing in our state’s future. Every connected household represents a new potential entrepreneur, a student equipped for the digital workforce and a patient able to access telehealth services. It’s about fostering economic growth, empowering communities, and ensuring that all Washingtonians have a fair shot at success in the 21st century.
We cannot afford to let politics stand in the way of progress. Leaders like Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell have fought tooth and nail to bring digital equity to our state and advocate for our rural communities. Congress must put partisan differences aside and renew funding for the Affordable Connectivity Program. This is about ensuring that every Floridians has the tools they need to thrive in the digital age.
