A bus leaving from Sebring and heading to an out-of-town senior trip was pulled over on the Sebring Parkway and the driver of the bus was taken into custody in handcuffs. Allegedly he may have been intoxicated. Another bus arrived and the seniors were back on their way to Daytona for their trip. (It was a charter bus NOT a Highlands County school bus
Statement from The School Board of Highlands County concerning the charter bus situation that occurred Saturday afternoon in Sebring.
School Board———We want to express our deep appreciation to the organizers of the Sebring High School Project Graduation trip who were on the charter bus this evening. By recognizing that the driver was potentially impaired they were able to stop the bus and contact law-enforcement and prevent what could have been a tragic situation. Project Graduation is not a school or district-sponsored or organized event, it is an independent event that is sponsored and organized by parents of students in the graduating class. They poured hundreds of hours of work into fundraising and coordinating these events for their children and it is unfortunate that they had this experience. Thankfully, once the situation was resolved, the students were able to get underway to what hopefully will be a safe and fun evening!
