The National Hurricane Center marked the first Florida-impacting tropical disturbance of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season Tuesday, set to traverse directly across the peninsula, primely serving as a large “rainmaker” starting in the southwestern and central portions of the state.
Hurricane season begins June 1, and Floridians still have a few days to access disaster preparedness items tax-free, through June 14. Another holiday takes place on Aug. 24, when the season’s bulk of activity is set to begin.
The tropical disturbance, called 90L, has a very low 20% chance of forming in the next week, the center said.
It is set to travel across Florida and into the Atlantic Ocean, moving northeast.
Flood advisories have been occurring in portions of southern Florida as of Tuesday morning.
The center said the development chance is nearly 0%, at least until it reaches the Atlantic, where it will be moving away from Florida.
The bulk of hurricane season activity historically tends to ramp up beginning late August, peaking into September and October. The season ends Nov. 30.
