Skylar Waller has made her college decision to play basketball and continue her academics at Southeastern University in Lakeland, FL.
Southeastern University’s women’s basketball program has gained the commitment of a First Region talent. Marshall County’s Skylar Waller made the announcement on Wednesday to continue her academic and basketball career in Lakeland, FL with the Fire.
The Marshal County standout has had her fair share of physical obstacles that could have sidelined her entire basketball career, but a determination to come back each time healthier and stronger kept her motivated.
“I always had doubts,” Waller said. “After my second shoulder surgery I was very doubtful. But, once I came back I became more confident. Then I hurt my knee last summer then I really doubted myself, but I’m back to almost being fully released again and that gives me a lot of confidence. Each injury has definitely been a setback, but they have made me so much stronger in the process.”
Currently in her golf season, Waller also thought about going the collegiate golf route.
“So many people told me to just play college golf because it would just be easier on my body,” Waller said. “And I really did consider it, but I’ve wanted to play college basketball since I was little and I knew I wouldn’t be as happy playing college golf as I would college basketball.”
Throughout her two healthy years as a Lady Marshal on the hardwood, Waller has tallied 661 points and brought with her another 720 points as a Calloway County Lady Laker before joining Marshall County.
She credits the basketball culture at Marshall County to her readiness for college basketball.
“There’s just a very high standard playing at Marshall,” Waller said. “There’s always been success there, so just that winning culture, going into practice every single day, expecting to win. There’s always been that winning culture and I think that will prepare me for college.”
The Fire put on a 22-8 campaign last season in The Sun Conference. They capped off the season winning the conference and making an appearance in the NAIA Tournament.
