At approximately 11:35 AM, the Lakeland Fire Department (LFD) was dispatched to Sleepy Hill Elementary, located at 2285 Sleepy Hill Rd., in response to reports of a propane and carbon monoxide (CO) leak in the school’s cafeteria.
Upon arrival, LFD quickly determined that the leak was confined to the cafeteria, and the building was immediately evacuated to ensure the safety of students, faculty, and staff. Several individuals on scene reported feeling lightheaded and dizzy. Polk County Fire Rescue (PCFR) transported six adult patients to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment; several additional adult patients had symptoms but refused transport.
Firefighters located the source of the leak and shut off the propane supply; the building was thoroughly ventilated, bringing the scene under control.
