From one of the fastest-growing cities in Florida to the smallest municipality in Tennessee, Lakeland Fire Department’s 2004 Pierce Quantum Pumper will soon be added to the Cottage Grove Volunteer Fire Department’s fire apparatus fleet, replacing their current model, a 1982 Spartan.
This particular fire engine has a long history. It served as a frontline apparatus for the Lakeland Fire Department for 16 years before being stationed as a reserve unit at the LFD Fire Training Center. Now, it embarks on a new journey, traveling 850 miles to its new home in Cottage Grove. Representing the connection and sense of community within the fire service, it will continue to serve another department while stationed at the Henry County Airport Station #4.
Chief Jon Wiener and his firefighters are thrilled about this addition, as it will enhance their emergency response capabilities in the community. The City of Cottage Grove, the smallest incorporated municipality in Tennessee, with 66 residents, according to the 2020 US census data, will benefit from this upgrade in terms of safety and protection.
“This pumper will be the newest in our fleet. We operate from donations, and being able to find a quality unit at a fair price always helps,” said Chief Wiener. Cottage Grove Volunteer Fire Department purchased the engine for approximately $25,000 – the sale will contribute to the LFD apparatus replacement account, which finances future truck replacements.
Fire Chief Doug Riley from Lakeland Fire Department is happy to be able to assist Chief Weiner and the Cottage Grove Volunteer Fire Department in their search for a reliable and affordable fire engine. “This will allow them to continue to serve and protect the citizens of their small community for years to come,” he said.
Cottage Grove Volunteer Fire Department is located in rural West Tennessee, covering a population of 2,500. The 88-square-mile area operates out of 4 stations and has 30 volunteer firefighters. CGVFD responds to 30-40 calls annually, covering one-fifth of Henry County, Tennessee. The department was formed in 1975 and is a 501(c)(3) entity.
