Lakeland’s emergency shelters are seeing more people as cold weather keeps its hold on Lakeland.
Talbot House Ministries, which operates Lakeland’s emergency overnight shelter on Kentucky Avenue, provided 139 individuals with a bed on Monday night, according to Marcus Wright Jr., its director of development. That’s 16% above its normal headcount of 120 people.
“They just started coming in [Monday] night with the cold weather,” he said. “We are seeing a little bit of an influx.”
Lakeland is expected to see its coldest overnight temperatures Wednesday into Thursday.
Residents should expect cooler temperatures through next week with a cold shot possible mid-week, causing overnight temps to plunge into the 30s again.
