A man was arrested after throwing a pill bottle with fentanyl and running away from troopers during a traffic stop on Monday, the Florida Highway Patrol announced.
According to FHP, troopers noticed a black moped traveling east on Ronald Reagan Parkway and appeared to be avoiding the trooper by cutting in and out of parking lots and streets.
The trooper then described the moped and the rider, later identified as Kevin Abreu, 29, to another trooper who observed the moped run a red light and make a left turn on Champions Gate Boulevard.
Abreu swerves toward a sewer drain and tosses a white object toward the sewer.
Abreu then stepped off the moped and began walking away when the trooper asked “hey where are you going?” before Abreu turned back to the moped turned back around and began to run toward Champions Gate Boulevard.
Both troopers ran after Abreu through traffic and into The Preserve apartment complex where a good Samaritan saw them chasing him and sprinted to the back of the complex before he took down Abreu, FHP said.
Abreu was placed under arrest shortly after.
According to FHP, cash was inside the left sock of Abreu as well as a bag containing blue M30 pills in his right sock.
The pill bottle thrown was also recovered which had blue M30 pills inside as well.
FHP said 174 pills were inside the sock and pill bottle and weighed 22 grams. One of the pills was tested and came back positive for fentanyl.
Troopers also checked his driver’s license and revealed he had a suspended driver’s license.
Abreu was taken to the Polk County Jail.
