A man who was shot during a 2022 police chase nearly died after Polk County jail officials for weeks refused medical treatment for his gunshot wound, according to a federal lawsuit filed last month.
Jason L. Pickles alleges that sheriff’s deputies offered him no more than ibuprofen as the wound from a bullet still lodged in his knee became increasingly painful and infected, the suit alleges. Deputies ignored his requests, the complaint states, and retaliated against him when he complained, at one point moving him to an isolation cell and later restraining him to an infirmary bed.
