A Lakeland woman died Thursday, a day after she was injured in a motorcycle crash, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Marie Ellen Porter, 65, was the only person involved in the crash that occurred about 11:45 a.m. Wednesday on U.S. 98, north of Socrum Loop Road West in Lakeland, PCSO said.
According to the preliminary investigation, Porter was driving a black 2016 Indian Scout motorcycle south on U.S. 98, PCSO said. That stretch of the road is a construction zone, and there was loose dirt on the freshly paved southbound lane.
The dirt likely caused the motorcycle to lose traction, and Porter lost control of the bike, PCSO said. As the motorcycle tipped, her head appears to have struck a road sign. She was not wearing a helmet, PCSO said.
Porter died after being removed from life-support in a hospital Thursday afternoon, the agency said. The Traffic Homicide Unit investigated the crash from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
