Procrastinating taxpayers across the country have less than a week to go before they need to file last year’s returns – but, not in Florida.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is offering people and businesses in areas that fell under federal disaster declarations last year a couple extra weeks. That includes everyone in the Sunshine State.
The IRS reminded residents of nine states about the extended deadline, which will give them until Thursday, May 1, to file.
Florida is one of five states where everyone is included in the postponement.
Extensions beyond May 1 are available, the IRS noted, but the taxpayer must request them. Information on how those extensions work can be found at IRS.gov/extensions.
The other four are: Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The full list of affected areas Alaska, New Mexico, Tennessee, and Virginia is available here.
Other parts of the country were also granted disaster-related extension that will mean they do not need to file until this fall. In Los Angeles County, California, the deadline was pushed to October 15 because of the wildfires; while people and businesses in several Kentucky counties will not have to file until November 3.
