The U.S. Postal Service wants to boost the cost of mailing a first-class letter from 73 cents to 78 cents this summer.
The Postal Service on Wednesday requested the Postal Regulatory Commission give its approval to the price increase. Commission approval is required to raise the rate.iffs and trade ahead of Modi-Trump talks
If approved, the 5-cent increase for a “forever” stamp and similar increases for postcards, metered letters and international mail would take effect July 13, the USPS said in a statement. The increase amounts to about 7.4%.
The Postal Service contends, as it did last year when it enacted a similar increase, that it’s needed to achieve financial stability. The price adjustments are in line with the organization’s Delivering for America 10-year plan, proposed under former Postmaster General Louis DeJoy.
Increases in prices also have been proposed for other products. The cost of a metered 1-ounce letter would rise from 69 cents to 74 cents. Domestic postcards, now priced at 56 cents, would cost 62 cents. International postcards and international letters, both now priced at $1.65, would cost $1.70.
Additional-ounce price for single-piece letters will increase from 28 cents to 29 cents.
One rate could decrease.
