URGENT: Hate From the Dais Is a Public-Safety Risk—Polk County Must Act Now
When leaders normalize cruelty, communities get less safe. We’ve seen this across the country: when rhetoric dehumanizes neighbors, threats against school boards, election workers, and faith communities spike. Public office is not a bullhorn for mockery—it’s a duty to calm, protect, and unite.
Commissioner Bill Braswell has used an official public social media platform to inflame—not inform. This isn’t “free speech”; it’s reckless conduct by a government actor that erodes public safety and trust.
Abuse of Office
• Uses an official, county-branded presence to propagate hostility and conspiracy tropes• Blocks constituents for factual criticism while conducting county business on the same page• Turns a 6,500-follower public platform into a megaphone for contempt rather than service
Dangerous, Escalating Rhetoric
• Tells Chicago residents to “eat crime” while ridiculing victims of violence• Posts images of school buses riddled with bullets—joking about children being gunned down• Makes vague threats about making people “disappear” and trivializes serial killers during local safety crises
Systematic Targeting and Hate
• Mocks Muslims, Jews, Black Americans, and overweight women• Deploys Nazi-adjacent terminology while body-shaming constituents• Takes shots at the former First Lady Obama and spreads racially divisive narratives
The Leadership Culture Problem
Commissioners Rick Wilson and Bill Braswell, because Martha Santiago might as well be absent entirely. So how are these two “mentoring” the new commissioners, Becky Troutman and Michael Scott—what exactly are they teaching: that derision is leadership, that constituents asking for lawful ordinances can be demeaned, that ethics are optional? This is how a toxic style metastasizes from one seat to an entire board.
A Nation With Leaders Who Spew Hatred Is Weaker
Healthy democracies rely on restraint from officials. Communities that tolerate dehumanizing speech from power see more intimidation, fewer bystanders willing to speak, and a chilling effect on civic participation. Polk County doesn’t need shock-jock politics; it needs adults, everything but Braswell, who has anger outbursts while citizens petition the government, while censoring speech.
Pattern, Not a One-Off

When confronted, Commissioner Braswell doesn’t reflect or repair. He doubles down. That’s not accountability. It’s defiance with violence
What Responsible Leadership Looks Like
• Model empathy after tragedy; never mock victims• Keep official channels civil, factual, and open to all viewpoints• Separate personal venting from public, taxpayer-amplified communications• Adhere to county charter, ethics rules, and basic decency • Create unity among all the 850,000 citizens elected to represent. Clearly,
there is precedent and process for removal when an elected official engages in misconduct, including posting hate speech that could be considered a violation of their oath, ethics laws, or codes of conduct.
Polk is still way too primitive. It is abundantly clear that Commissioner Braswell is a true bigot! Braswells emails alone reflect that fact. Braswell is way out of line with his support of sheriff Judd. Judd blatantly is in violation of ordinances & state laws. Judd has not been following through with his oath as sheriff. Most of the commissioners are complicit to the actions of Judd. That fact alone makes them all derelict in their duties as well. The sheriff is subject to whatever the commissioners order him to do within the law. Judd refuses to equip his deputies with cameras. The cameras may save themselves in court. They will be shielded from baseless lawsuits. The department can support their deputies. Lots of departments do not stand behind cops these days. Once they are a liability, they drop the deputy. As a Florida native of Polk County I have seen a lot here. I would like to think we have made some progress over the years. Not much has changed. Braswell has posted hateful political statements on his emails. Braswell does not speak for most of Polk county. I would like to see Braswell removed From office for hate speech and his bigoted remarks about others. I plan to do all I can to get Braswell removed. I encourage those who agree with me to not be intimidated by the sheriff or county commissioners. Stand up for what is right and your actions will change our county from primitive to kind and peaceful citizens worthy of change.
