My name is Diana Bravo, , and I have lived in Polk County for five years. I am proud to see our county growing and improving, but progress should include compassion as well as construction. True community growth is not only about roads and buildings – it is also about what we bring into the heart of our community. Citizens care about many things, and one of them is working toward better, more efficient Animal Control and shelters. Animals in our care deserve proper facilities, programs that help them thrive, and humane treatment. Let’s show that Polk County can lead by example.
I want to note that I have not been directly involved in meetings or official advocacy efforts. However, I have been reading posts, following updates, and staying engaged with local advocates. I want to be a voice for the animals in our community — for those who cannot speak for themselves.
I care deeply about the animals in our community and the operations of Animal Control. People who love animals want to live in a county where they know their pets – and all animals – are treated humanely and responsibly.
Other counties in Florida have made notable progress:
Duval County (Jacksonville): Named Florida’s Outstanding Animal Control Agency for two consecutive years, with reduced euthanasia rates.
Santa Rosa County: Maintained a no-kill status in 2022, saving over 90% of animals entering the shelter.
Pinellas County: Renovated shelter facilities with air-conditioned kennels and a new medical hospital, strengthening disaster preparedness.
Leon County: Focuses on education, prevention, and enforcement programs while collaborating with the community.
Miami-Dade County: Invests in programs and services designed to protect and improve the lives of animals.
Polk County has the opportunity to learn from these successes and adopt similar strategies to improve animal welfare locally.
I respectfully ask that Polk County continue working toward:
Expanding affordable spay/neuter and vaccination programs.
Supporting humane TNR programs for community cats.
Increasing adoption outreach and volunteer involvement.
Ensuring greater transparency in shelter data and operations.
Thank you for your dedication and service to our community. I hope you will consider these steps to make Polk County a place we can all be proud of – one that values both its people and its animals.
