For five months, citizens have begged the Polk County Board of Commissioners to do their jobs — to pass the humane ordinances every neighboring county already has. Instead of governing, they’ve blamed Sheriff Grady Judd:
𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟑, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓 — 𝐁𝐎𝐂𝐂 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠Commissioner Bill Braswell: “𝐘𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞… 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐟. 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐟’𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐥.”
𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓 — 𝐁𝐎𝐂𝐂 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠Chairman Rick Wilson: “𝐔𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐟 𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐮𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐝… 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐁𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.”
By saying that out loud, Braswell and Wilson handed Sheriff Grady Judd complete ownership of every failure the Board swore an oath to handle. Even a sixth-grader knows: 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐥𝐚𝐰𝐬, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦. But why bother with democracy when you can blame Grady?
𝐋𝐞𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐜𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐬-𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜:
No pet-sale rules? 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐲’𝐬 𝐟𝐚𝐮𝐥𝐭. No tethering standards? 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐲’𝐬 𝐟𝐚𝐮𝐥𝐭. No spay/neuter vouchers? 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐲’𝐬 𝐟𝐚𝐮𝐥𝐭. No humane sheltering? 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐲. No animal-abuse registry? 𝐒𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐲. Community cats born from shelter escapees? Pin a badge on each one—they’re his now.
Grady knows he shouldn’t be sanctioning killing in his name. It violates 𝐅𝐋 𝐒𝐭. 𝟖𝟐𝟑.𝟏𝟓: reduce euthanasia through 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. You can’t kill your way out of a crisis you created.
𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬:
𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚’𝐬 #𝟏 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫 — 𝟕 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐫𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠
𝟐𝟎 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫 to relocate from the landfill — 𝐫𝐞𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝
𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬’ 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐧𝐨-𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐚𝐥 — 𝐫𝐞𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝟏𝟎-𝐩𝐞𝐫-𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬 — euthanized animals sold for parts
Phone/volunteer bans, moving fences, “Bad Dog” signs, chaotic July policy — 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐠𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐝, 𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝
The Board thinks it dodged blame. It didn’t. By refusing to legislate, they assigned the keys to the whole disaster to Grady. 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬, 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐰𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝, 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐭 — it all sits on his desk now, with his name on the gate.
If I were Grady, I’d invite every sheriff in Florida to tour that rat-and-roach palace and ask: “𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐞?” Then I’d hand the Commissioners a mop and the legislative authority they swore an oath to use.
Saint Peter is waiting, Grady. If you’d only spend your time enforcing FS 316.293.
