The Polk County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) identified the woman who passed away as 79-year-old Geneva Lane.

Details of the Collision

According to investigators from the PCSO Traffic Homicide Unit:

• The Incident: At approximately 3:54 p.m., Ms. Lane was driving a 2017 Subaru SUV and was stopped at the intersection, waiting to turn left across the westbound lanes of Winter Lake Road.
• The Cause: Evidence and witness statements indicate that Ms. Lane began her turn but failed to yield to an oncoming 2006 Mercedes sedan, pulling directly into its path.
• The Impact: The driver of the Mercedes attempted to brake heavily but could not avoid the collision. The impact caused the Subaru to rotate and strike a large stone wall.
• Safety Measures: Both drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, and airbags deployed in both vehicles.

Injuries and Response

• Geneva Lane: Despite immediate lifesaving efforts by a deputy who witnessed the crash and Polk County Fire Rescue personnel, Ms. Lane was pronounced dead at the scene.
• Second Driver: The driver of the Mercedes was transported to a local hospital and was reported to be in critical condition.
