Filing taxes doesn’t have to break the bank

Filing taxes doesn’t have to break the bank. For 2026, the United Way of Central Florida (UWCF) has significantly expanded its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to help Polk County residents keep more of their hard-earned money.

By using these free services, taxpayers can save the $200–$500 typically charged by commercial preparers.

💰 Who Qualifies?

While the programs are designed for low-to-moderate-income households, the limits are quite generous for 2026:

  • Full Service (In-person): Available for households earning less than $80,000.
  • Self-Preparation (Online): Available via MyFreeTaxes.com for those earning under $89,000.

👵 AARP Tax-Aide Option

In addition to VITA, the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program offers free filing with a focus on taxpayers over 50. You do not need to be an AARP member to use this service. You can find their specific sites (often in local libraries) using the AARP Site Locator.
