The LDDA stands for the Lakeland Downtown Development Authority.

Essentially, it is the organization responsible for making sure downtown Lakeland stays vibrant, clean, and economically healthy. Established in 1977, it operates as a “special taxing district,” meaning property owners within the downtown boundaries pay a small extra tax that is reinvested directly back into the area.

1. Major Community Events

If you’ve spent a Saturday morning or a Friday night downtown, you’ve likely seen their work. They manage and produce:

The Downtown Farmers Curb Market: Held every Saturday (except August) on N. Kentucky Ave.
First Friday: The massive monthly street party featuring car shows, live music, and makers.
Tasty Tuesdays: A monthly food-sampling event where you can try bites from various downtown restaurants.

2. Business & Economic Growth

The LDDA acts as an advocate for downtown business owners. They work to attract new shops and restaurants, offer incentive programs or grants to help with startup costs, and lobby the city for physical improvements like better sidewalks or lighting.

3. Design & Appearance

They have “design review authority.” This means if a business wants to put up a new sign or renovate a building facade within the district, the LDDA ensures it fits the aesthetic and historical character of downtown Lakeland.

4. Governance

The authority is led by a seven-member Board of Directors. Six are property owners elected by the district, and the seventh is a City Commissioner appointed by the Mayor. They typically meet on the third Thursday of every month at 8:00 AM at City Hall, and these meetings are open to the public if you ever want to see how the “sausage is made.”
