Sheriff Grady Judd calling taxpayers “crazy” or “radical”

Sheriff Grady Judd has one of the largest public platforms in Polk County. With a single post or during his regular coffee talk segments, he could mobilize thousands of residents to donate, foster, volunteer, and support animals at Polk County Animal Control.

He has the ability to create real, immediate impact by bringing visibility to animals in need of homes, medical care, and socialization.

Instead, advocates raising documented concerns and proposing proven solutions have been dismissed as “crazy” or “radical.”

To be clear, this has never been about the animal control officers.

Officers are doing difficult, underpaid work, under conditions they did not create and do not control. They deserve support, resources, and leadership that sets them up for success.

This has always been about policy, leadership, and outcomes.

Polk County continues to operate without:

• a county-supported spay and neuter voucher program

• a Community Cat/TNVR program

• a fully accessible volunteer program

• a robust foster network

• structured adoption matching and placement support

• programs that help pet owners keep their animals, including behavioral support, food assistance, and low-cost resources

These are not fringe ideas.

They are standard, evidence-based practices used across Florida and the country to reduce intake, improve public safety, and save lives.

When these systems are absent, the outcome is predictable and preventable.

Blaming residents alone while refusing to implement the very programs designed to address these issues does not solve the problem.

It is also notable that, despite being invited, Sheriff Judd has not attended commissioner meetings to engage directly with advocates and residents on these issues.

With a platform that reaches hundreds of thousands, it is reasonable to expect consistent promotion of solutions such as adoption, fostering, and volunteerism rather than dismissing those raising concerns.

Sheriff Judd, your platform reaches hundreds of thousands, often millions, of people.

That platform could be used to:

• promote adoptable animals

• recruit fosters and volunteers

• educate the public

• support real, measurable solutions

That is where meaningful impact happens.

We are not a “crazy” or “radical” few.

We are residents asking for proven policies, transparency, and leadership that aligns with modern sheltering standards already in place across the state and the country.

The question is not whether solutions exist.

  1. When you have actionable, proven, widely used options , what could be the reason to not implement life saving solutions? Why would anyone continue to choose to kill 300-400 animals per month? By using our first amendment rights, we will continue to encourage the Sheriff and Commissioners to work toward helping the citizens and animals in Polk County by implementing life saving programs. Please join us to encourage our leaders to listen and act.

  2. It’s clear that animals dont matter to him…which isn’t really.surprising tbh…while he is funny and makes great lil sayings and sound bites he doesn’t see animals as important.and if it doesn’t get a headline or generate income i dont think our sheriff gives it a second thought…he hasn’t thought about how many people (like me) that think a dog is more important than any person is and anyone who doesn’t see any value in a dog to just let them be caged and killed well that person has less than no value in my book !!! (Sorry not a cat person) dogs are pure love wrapped in fur no matter how they are treated they continue to love how can that not be something to protect ???
