This is a massive hire for Polk State College! Bringing in someone with the pedigree of Marreese “Mo” Speights is a huge win for the Eagles’ basketball program.
Speights brings an incredible wealth of experience from the absolute highest levels of the game back home to Central Florida:
- The Resume: He’s an NCAA National Champion (with the 2006–07 Florida Gators) and an NBA Champion (with the 2015 Golden State Warriors, where he was a key piece of their legendary “Strength in Numbers” bench).
- Local Roots: Hailing from nearby St. Petersburg, he already has deep ties to the area’s basketball scene. He even coached his Speights Academy postgraduate team to a championship right inside Polk State’s gymnasium back in 2023.
- Coaching Trajectory: This marks his first collegiate head coaching gig, but he’s been rising fast. He spent time as an assistant at Georgia Southern, served as Director of Player Development at USF, and most recently led Northside Christian School to the 2A state semifinals.
Having played under coaching legends like Billy Donovan and Steve Kerr, he’s got a phenomenal blueprint for building a winning culture. His official start date is June 1, and it’s safe to say the energy around Polk State hoops is about to skyrocket.
