As a fourth-generation Lakelander, his life, career, and public service were deeply intertwined with the history and growth of the city.
A Century-Long Business Legacy
Boring spent 55 years at Boring Business Systems, a staple of the local economy that originally began in 1924 as the Lakeland Typewriter & Supply Co. He worked his way up the ladder to become the owner and president, guiding the 102-year-old family company through massive technological shifts—transforming it from a traditional office equipment supplier into a modern managed technology services provider.
Devotion to Public Service
Beyond his success in the private sector, Boring was deeply committed to local governance and community development:
- City Commission: He served faithfully as a Lakeland City Commissioner for 10 years. Reflecting his stellar reputation and the trust he earned from residents, he ran unopposed for both of his terms.
- Civic Leadership: He lent his time and leadership to numerous organizations that shape Lakeland today, including the Lakeland Downtown Development Association, the Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce, the Lakeland Economic Development Council, the United Way, and the Lakeland Rotary Club.
Personal Passions
In his personal life, Boring was a man of diverse interests. In his earlier years, he competed in professional motorcycle road racing and collected vintage sports cars (including a Ferrari 250 GT/E). He was an avid golfer, a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church, a passionate Florida Gators and Tampa Bay Bucs fan (holding charter season tickets since 1976), and loved spending time fishing with family off Anna Maria Island.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Harriet, his children, grandchildren, and brothers.
