Lakeland police urge ‘Red, White, and Kaboom’ visitors to prepare for extreme heat

That warning from the Lakeland Police Department isn’t something to take lightly, especially given how intense the heat has been lately. LPD specifically cited the Sun ‘n Fun Expo earlier this year—where emergency crews had to handle more than 80 heat-related calls on a single Saturday—as a major reason they are heavily emphasizing prep this time around.

If you are planning to head down to Lake Mirror this Friday, July 3rd, here is what you need to know to stay safe, cool, and aligned with city rules:

Essential Heat & Safety Preparation

  • Pre-Hydrate: Start drinking extra water the day before the event. Once you feel thirsty in the afternoon sun, you are already slightly dehydrated.
  • Bring Hand-Held Umbrellas: While pop-up tents, large beach umbrellas, and staked shade structures are strictly banned by the city, personal hand-held umbrellas are allowed and highly recommended for portable shade.
  • Take a Quick Kid Photo: LPD Special Operations Sgt. Chad Mumbauer explicitly advised parents to take a photo of their young children in the exact outfit they are wearing before arriving at Lake Mirror. If anyone wanders off in the crowd of 30,000 to 50,000 people, showing that current photo to officers on the scene makes locating them much faster.
  • Know the Security Layout: Downtown streets will be closed, and the city will be strategically positioning large garbage trucks to block major intersections to keep vehicular traffic completely out of pedestrian zones. LPD will also be utilizing surveillance drones to monitor crowd safety from above.

Red, White, and Kaboom 2026 Schedule

The event is completely free and celebrates America’s 250th anniversary this year.

  • 5:30 PM: The Sing Out Crew (local youth singing group) kicks off the evening and performs the National Anthem.
  • 6:00 PM: Official welcome and food truck areas open (located in the Magnolia Building parking lot). Local alt-rock cover band Bully For You will play live sets throughout the evening.
  • 9:00 PM: The 18-minute fireworks display begins over Lake Mirror.

🎒 Quick Packing Checklist:

  • Admission “Ticket”: Bring a canned/non-perishable food item (soup, tuna, peanut butter) to donate to Volunteers in Service to the Elderly (VISTE).
  • Coolers & Chairs: Blankets and personal coolers are fully permitted.
  • What to Leave at Home: No glass containers of any kind, no personal fireworks or sparklers, no personal drones, and no grills.

If you plan to bring pets, keep them on a short leash, protect their paws from the hot pavement during the early evening, and remember that many animals don’t do well with the 9:00 PM pyrotechnics. Stay safe and stay hydrated!
