The Numbers Don’t Lie. Polk County is Still Florida’s Deadliest Shelter System.

While other Florida communities embrace modern and humane shelter management, Polk County Animal Control, under Sheriff Grady Judd and the Board of County Commissioners, continues to lead the state in shelter deaths.

Data from the University of Florida’s 2024 Shelter-Level Data reveal a staggering reality:

1 Shelter vs. 3 Major Florida Counties Combined

– Miami-Dade, Lee, and Broward Counties combined serve 5.5 million residents with 48,665 total animal intakes.

– Polk County alone serves under 850,000 residents with around 14,000 animal intakes.

The Result: Polk County’s 6,273 non-live outcomes (animals killed, died, or lost) exceeded the non-live outcomes of Miami-Dade, Lee, and Broward combined.

How does a county with a much smaller population end up with worse outcomes than three major metropolitan areas combined?

Refusing Modern Science-Based Solutions

Despite clear evidence across Florida showing that Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR) reduces shelter intakes and saves taxpayer money, Polk County leadership publicly called TNVR a “terrible idea” and continues to rely on ineffective lethal control.

Over 45,000 animals have been killed in Polk County since 2018. This isn’t an overpopulation crisis; it’s a policy choice. Polk County kills more pets than PETA.

The public outcry is growing. Mainstream news outlets across Florida, including the Orlando Sentinel, WFLA, Fox 13, and The Ledger, are reporting on the crisis.

Even state leaders outside Polk County, like Representative Anna V. Eskamani, are taking notice as advocates demand immediate changes.

– Humane, science-based TNVR for community cats instead of trap-and-slaughter.
