Tropical Storm Cristobal Forms as NHC Tracks Two New Waves

Tropical Storm Cristobal formed in the far northern Atlantic, becoming the third named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season. Simultaneously, forecasters at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) are tracking two other tropical disturbances in the deep Atlantic.

1. Tropical Storm Cristobal

  • Location: Located in the North/Subtropical Atlantic (west-southwest of the Azores).
  • Intensity: Maximum sustained winds of around 45 mph.
  • Impact: No land threats. Cristobal is moving over cool waters and encountering hostile northerly wind shear and dry air. It is expected to weaken rapidly and dissipate.

2. Area of Interest 1: Invest 92L (Leading Wave)

  • Location: Central Tropical Atlantic, roughly 950–1,000 miles east-southwest of the Leeward Islands/Cabo Verde.
  • Outlook: The NHC previously gave it a high chance (up to 80%) of development into a tropical depression. However, unfavorable upper-level winds and dry air are expected to limit its organization as it moves westward toward the eastern Caribbean.

3. Area of Interest 2: African Eastern Wave (Trailing Wave)

  • Location: Just off the western coast of Africa.
  • Outlook: Moving westward across the eastern tropical Atlantic. While short-term development chances remain low, environmental conditions are expected to become gradually more favorable over the next week.
