Because these mosquitoes complete their egg-to-adult lifecycle in under a week, performing this weekly 10-minute “Drain and Cover” sweep removes potential breeding sites before adults can emerge.
- Minutes 0–3: Patios, Porches & Planters: Targeting high-frequency collection spots.
- Potted Plant Saucers: Tip out standing water collected under potted plants. For indoor or patio plants in saucers, scrub the inside rim with a sponge—Aedes eggs stick firmly to surfaces above the waterline.
- Birdbaths & Pet Dishes: Dump, scrub, and refill fresh water. Scrubbing is crucial to dislodge glued-on mosquito eggs.
- Bromeliads & Water-Holding Plants: Flush the central cup of bromeliads with a strong jet of water from a hose every few days to wash out mosquito larvae, or apply BTI (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis) granules.

- Downspout Extensions & Corrugated Pipes: Check flexible plastic downspout extensions where water settles in the ridges. Adjust them so they drain completely.
- Rain Gutters: Visually check for clogging leaves or standing water near downspouts. Clear debris to maintain flow.
- AC Condensation Lines: Ensure air conditioner drip lines drain onto gravel or dirt rather than pooling on hard ground.
4. Minutes 8–10: Trash & Storage Areas: Securing final collection containers.
- Recycling & Trash Cans: Drill drainage holes in the bottoms of outdoor bins. Ensure lids fit tightly and do not trap water on top.
- Water Storage Cans / Rain Barrels: Cover any water collection barrels tightly with fine wire mesh (1/16 inch) to prevent mosquitoes from entering to lay eggs.
Personal Protection Measures
In addition to draining standing water around the home, apply personal defense against adult mosquitoes:
