Down Syndrome is a chromosomal abnormality that occurs in one of every 691 children born. Approximately 12,000 individuals in Florida and 400,000 nationally have Down syndrome and research, early intervention, and quality medical care have resulted in dramatic improvements in the lifespan and potential of those who are affected. Individuals with Down syndrome contribute greatly to the state of Florida and play active roles in their communities. Down Syndrome Awareness Month is an important time to raise awareness and promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome in our communities and workplaces.
