Southeastern University will be one of 18 colleges and universities to participate in the Q Union national event on Tuesday, October 29. The evening will combine three nationally broadcasted live talks and three on-campus student talks.
The nationally broadcasted talks will be shown at all 18 universities and the speakers include Malcolm Gladwell, author and journalist; Rebekah Lyons, author and speaker; and Francis Chan, pastor and author. The 2019 Southeastern student speakers are Trey Hinkle, Desiree Davenport and Jenson Metcalf.
Q Union is a branch of Q Commons, a community that creates a general space and platform for people to engage in cultural conversations. Q Commons encourages people to ask questions, be curious, think well about things and listen. Q Union was created because the founder saw a need for college students to have this same opportunity. It serves as a platform for college students to begin to engage in these cultural conversations as well and it invites them to hear from both respected national leaders and their own peers.
Southeastern began its involvement with Q Union three years ago and one of their students, Cassandra Dorsaint, was the first student to speak at the 2018 Q National Conference.
“Every student who speaks at their college or university’s Q Union event has the opportunity to be selected to speak at the Q Commons national conference. We know that change like this is what happens when we continue creating space to dialogue about the things happening in our culture,” said Ray Allen, director of multicultural affairs at Southeastern.
Q Union is a free event for Southeastern students and the public may also attend. The event takes place in the Student Activities Center on campus from 7 to 9 p.m. Seating is limited. To request a ticket or for more information, contact Ray Allen at [email protected].
