The SEU men’s basketball team defeated Johnson & Wales 86-58 on the road this evening to advance to 13-5 on the season. Southeastern opened up the first five minutes of play with a seven-point advantage to lead 12-5 against the Wildcats.
Midway through the first frame, a three-pointer from JWU’s Michael Stuart cut the Fire’s lead to six. With 9:31 remaining, SEU held a 22-16 advantage over the Wildcats.
For the next seven minutes, Southeastern went on an 11-point run and held JWU scoreless for 5:10 to advance their lead to 31-16 with 3:40 to go in the frame.
The biggest lead in the half was seen with 41 seconds left after a lay-up from Dylan Patrick would advance the Fire’s lead to 21-points.
At the end of the half, Southeastern led 43-25 against the Wildcats.
Patrick and Jeremy Oppenheimer finished the first half with 10 points each. Freshman, Riley Minix also ended the half with nine points and two steals.
From the field, the Fire were shooting .452 and .455 from beyond the arc. Southeastern also had much success from the free-throw line, as they sunk 10 of their 11 attempts.
After five minutes of play in the second, the Fire continued their momentum as they grew their advantage over JWU by 20-points.
The biggest lead seen in the game was after a tip-in from Riley Minix improved the Fire’s advantage by 33-points with 3:10 remaining.
At the final whistle, the Fire earned an 86-58 victory over Johnson & Wales to improve to 13 wins on the season.
Five Fire individuals finished the night with double-digit points. Small forward, Minix led the team with a total of 25 points and nine rebounds.
Patrick and Jeremy Oppenheimer earned 15 points each. Reggie Mesidor and Isaiah Moody both finished with 10 points each as well.
Southeastern will be back in action on January 11th as they return home to play No. 22 Keiser University at 7 p.m.
