Heavy rain from then-Hurricane Elsa caused a manhole to overflow in South Lakeland about 5 a.m. Wednesday, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection reported.
The rain overwhelmed the sanitary sewer system, and approximately 75,000 gallons of fluid were released into a drainage ditch that flows into Poley Creek.
City crews and contract pumping trucks were called in and stopped the overflow at 1:30 p.m. Samples were collected in the area, DEP reported.
