The Polk Theatre in Lakeland is scheduled to reopen Saturday after a closure of several weeks.
The theater announced on its website and through social media that it would resume programming with the showing of “The Iron Giant” at 2 p.m. Saturday, followed by “Twister” at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, the theater has scheduled “Manet” at 2 p.m. and “My Fair Lady” at 5 p.m. The comedy “Blazing Saddles” is scheduled for Monday at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available online at polktheatre.org.
The theater’s management reported on July 9 that a pipe had broken under the seats in the orchestra’s center section, causing flooding in the basement of the historic building at 121 S. Florida Ave. In a series of posted updates since then, the management reported that the repair work was taking longer than expected.
The Polk Theatre, which opened in 1928, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A nonprofit owns and operates the venue, one of the last remaining atmospheric theaters in Florida operating as a movie house.
