The 1776 Soldier, released Oct. 23, will make readers see that our past always has a link to what happens today.
The novel begins with a murder in 1776 and a murder in 2023 that are linked. Roxy Stevens, a chef at the 1776 Inn, and Jake Adams, an HVAC technician in the Army, work together to find clues to solve the two murders. They fall in love while searching for those clues. Throughout the book, the author switches from present-day timeline to the timeline of 1776. Lady Arabella Winchester and Zebulon Adams are the ancestors of other characters in the book.
Using a journal and letters to write about the past was the first time author Louise Harris has written that way. The exercise was a challenge but a learning tool, Harris said.
“I wanted this novel to remind readers that our past is still relevant today,” she said. “I am concerned that we are losing our past. People no longer write letters and journals. How will those living a hundred years from now know what our lives were like?”
