Throughout 2023, the anti-LGBTQ+ witch-hunt persisted. Unnecessary laws endangered transgender folks, women, children, drag performers, and more. Fearing for our lives, we have dropped everything and fled our homes. So many have been refused medical treatment, education, and jobs. With the influx of government threats, venue owners were forced to cancel our events, even though we wanted nothing more than to raise money and provide a safe space for those in need. We have weathered death threats, increased security, and spent more money than ever before for peace of mind; this ordeal has been a tremendous waste of time and resources. We are only trying to live our lives and help others when possible.
That said, we have seen an influx of love and support from the community—not only here in Lakeland but nationwide. Allies are stepping up to support our work and back us in the fight for equal rights. I am so grateful for that!
I hope we will continue to stand together this year. I am confident our voices united can drown out the hate. Stand next to someone who is struggling. You may not understand what they are going through, but your support can make a huge difference—more than you know. Let 2024 be a year of unity and love! Let it be the year you learn something new about a neighbor and help them out.
