A Honduran man residing illegally in the United States was arrested in Polk County late Saturday night following a Lakeland hit-and-run crash.
34-year-old Maynor Martinez Trejo was taken into custody by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office after allegedly causing a rear-end collision and attempting to flee the scene.
The incident occurred around 10:47 PM on Saturday, January 11th, at the intersection of US 92 East and Fairway Avenue in Lakeland. A silver Ford Explorer was rear-ended by a black Nissan Altima driven by Martinez Trejo. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported.
After the collision, Martinez Trejo exited his vehicle and attempted to leave the scene on foot. However, a passenger from one of the involved vehicles pursued him and brought him back to the crash site.
Deputies arriving at the scene observed signs of impairment in Martinez Trejo, including the smell of alcohol on his breath, bloodshot and watery eyes, and difficulty standing. Further investigation revealed that the license plate on his Nissan Altima was not assigned to the vehicle.
Martinez Trejo was arrested and transported to the Polk County Jail, where he was charged with:
- DUI with Injury
- DUI
- Leaving the Scene of a Crash with Injury
- Attaching an Unassigned Tag
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Martinez Trejo is an illegal immigrant from Honduras. Immigration authorities have been notified of his arrest.
