In post-storm analysis, it was discovered that Hurricane Melissa had a wind gust of 252 mph before landfall. Hurricane Hunters dropped a sensor (dropsonde) while flying in the eyewall, and the sensor registered the highest wind gust ever recorded in a tropical cyclone. The gust was recorded at a height of 652 feet.
Winds equivalent to an EF-5 tornado.
