Eight Speed Humps Approved for Roads in Lakeland and Mulberry
Lakeland and Mulberry residents will no longer have to worry about being disturbed by speeding vehicles now that speed bumps have been approved for installation on three roads.
At their regular meeting on Tues. Dec. 16, Polk County Commissioners voted unanimously to approve three ordinances authorizing the installation of the following:
- ⦁ Four speed humps on Arizona Avenue in Lakeland for an estimated $20,000,
- ⦁ Two speed humps on Jamestown Avenue in Lakeland for $10,000, and
- ⦁ Two speed humps on Fox Creek Drive South in Mulberry for $10,000.
County staff determined the placement of these speed bumps after conducting traffic studies on each road and receiving a favorable vote from residents via distributed ballots.
Funding for all three projects is budgeted within the county’s Transportation Millage Fund.

Wish they would put speed bumps on San Antonio. Street between Alamo and Pepkin. Even school busses go as fast as 40 miles per hr. In the residential street.
Agreed. We were told we could not have them since our road is a “connector road”. Traffic consistently travels at 15-20 over the posted limit, and one in five has disabled their noise abatement devices in direct violation of Florida law. This is a NEIGHBORHOOD, not a high-speed bypass to your subdivision. Grady Judd is responsible for making sure traffic laws are enforced. Grady?? Afraid you’re going to catch one of your influential friends?
We live near S Florida just off Pipkin Road. Before the road improvements on Pipkin Road, there were sidewalks on both sides. They eliminated the sidewalk on the westbound side between Southfork and Harden Road. Without crosswalks it’s very unsafe for pedestrians and bicyclists crossing Pipkin Road in that stretch. It was a lot safer for us when we had a sidewalk on the northbound side of Pipkin. Crosswalks would help somewhat.
Odom rd in North Lakeland by Excel Academy. Needs speed bumps so bad. People drive 50 60 miles per hour all day long. With the school being on this rd with no signage or speed bumps its really scarey for the kids and the residents on this road.
Why not Mt. Airy Ave and Haywood St. We have 3 schools in a four block radius, not the first speedbump!! Finally got a crosswalk (no lights) that most people don’t stop for.
Are we supposed to petition for the safety of our students???
